1888 – Das Dreikaiserjahr – The Year of the Three Emperors

June 15, 2021

1888 was the so-called “๐——๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ท๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ฟ” because the German Empire saw three different emperors.

๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ช๐—ถ๐—น๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—บ ๐—œ, born in 1797, died on March 9th, 1888. He was succeeded by his son Friedrich (*1831) who reigned Germany as ๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐—œ๐—œ๐—œ for 99 days. He died of throat cancer on June 15th, 1888, so his son Wilhelm II (*1859) ascended to the German throne on the same day. ๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ช๐—ถ๐—น๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—บ ๐—œ๐—œ was the last German emperor, he abdicated in 1918 and died in exile in 1941.

Sometimes the year 1888 is also called “๐——๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜‡๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ท๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ฟ” (three pretzel year) because the eights look like pretzels.
